Written from 145 Price Street on September 23, 1868, this letter from Benjamin Dorr to the Wardens and Vestrymen of Christ Church, Philadelphia, offers to give up his entire salary, now and hereafter, as a free-will offering to be appropriated to the best interests of the Church [p.1]. In the fuller version, Dorr explains that his impaired health had prevented him from attending to the active duties of the parish as he would wish, and that by relinquishing his salary he sought to put it in the Vestry's power to provide any additional assistance in the parochial work they deemed necessary [p.2]. He affirms that so long as his health permits, he shall continue to esteem it a privilege to be in the chancel and take such parts of the service as he feels able to perform, and closes with warm thanks for the many kindnesses shown to him, signing as their friend and pastor [p.1, p.2].
