Abstract
This collection of correspondence and records documents governance and charitable matters at Christ Church, Philadelphia, in the mid-1840s. In a letter dated November 12, 1845, Rector B. Dorr writes to Moses Kempton, Esq., asking the Committee on the Rigby Legacy to place Mrs. Mary Warner of No. 177 North Front Street on their list of pensioners at ten dollars per quarter, describing her as a widow in feeble health with a sick dependent son and no means of support, and a worthy communicant of Christ Church whose mother, Mrs. Splane, had long been a pensioner. Dorr also requests a fifty dollar appropriation for the purchase of wood for the poor communicants of the church that winter [p.1].
A letter from William Fisher, Secretary of the Vestry of the Church of the Evangelists (Southwark), dated March 17, 1845, asks the Rector, Wardens, and Vestrymen of Christ Church to elect a delegate to serve as Vestryman of the Church of the Evangelists for the ensuing year, noting that the present delegate from Christ Church was Dr. Francis West [p.2r-2v].
Also included is the letter of resignation of Jonathan Patterson, dated March 8, 1845, tendering his resignation as Vestryman of Christ Church [p.3r-3v].
A later letter from B. Dorr to Moses Kempton, dated September 27, 1847, requests a personal loan of fifty dollars, to be brought to Kempton's house at dinner and collected by one of Dorr's children [p.4].
