Gilbert Tennent (1703-1764) was an Irish-American Presbyterian clergyman, and one of the leaders of the Great Awakening.

This manuscript contains two sermons by Tennent. The first sermon, on the subject of God's "shield and reward", begins by citing Genesis 15. The second sermon, on the subject of following in Christ's footsteps, begins with references to 1 Peter 2:21 and 1 John 2:6.

From dates noted on the manuscript, it looks like Tennent wrote these sermons in 1745, then delivered one or both again in 1749, 1752, 1755, and 1758,

De deo ut scuto et mercede (On God as shield and reward) is one of two short sermons. It surveys the use of these metaphors in beautiful and well-known quotations from the Psalms, the prophets and the New Testament to explore what kind of shield and the nature of the reward. As practical theology, the sermon greatly encourages and supports faith.

The second sermon, De sequendo vestigia Christi (On following Christ's footsteps) is quite brief meant to inspire efforts of believers not for the same perfection and miracle-working of Jesus, but to imitate his patience and self-denial, doing good in everyday life and rejecting the worldly.
