Letter from Assistant Minister George Woolsey Hodge to the rector, wardens, and vestrymen of Christ Church, Philadelphia, regarding the proposed establishment of a chapel in the western portion of Philadelphia to accommodate and retain parish members living in that area.

In a letter dated February 4, 1874, from 717 Locust Street, George Woolsey Hodge, Assistant Minister, addresses the Rector, Wardens, and Vestrymen of Christ Church, Philadelphia [p.1r]. Understanding that several members of the church body and others are anxious to establish a chapel in the western portion of the city to accommodate and retain parish members residing in that district, Hodge expresses his belief that such a measure is absolutely necessary to the permanent stability and welfare of the parish [p.1r]. Having been informed that these gentlemen would like him to take charge of the enterprise, he offers to relinquish his entire salary so that another assistant may be appointed to take charge of Calvary Church, stating that he will instead depend for his stipend on the offertory at the new chapel [p.1r-1v].
